I should caveat this post by saying I’m not sure ‘digital breadcrumbing’ is the right terminology for this post.
It might be completely wrong, as I just did a quick search on ‘breadcrumbing’ and the results displayed were all about manipulation in relationships, and other eye-brow raising stuff, and this is definitely NOT THAT.
So what exactly am I rambling about?
Over the past few weeks, I’ve written about creating an author newsletter, using a platform to collect subscribers and how to develop and use a lead magnet.
All of this works with Substack as well I should add, it’s just I’m keeping my readers on a separate email list to my Substack, although I know they’ll be some cross-over. *waves hand at those lucky readers getting both my newsletters!*
Digital Breadcrumbing
So what is it exactly?
It’s strategically placing calls-to-sign-up around a whole load of different places to create a trail of crumbs that bring in subscribers.
And although it sounds simple, I see SO MANY opportunities lost when I’m trying to sign up to newsletters myself.
You see, most people are nosey. When they see a post or a comment, or a bit of content from you they like, they’ll go and have a bit of a dig around to see what else they can find out about you.
That’s where digital breadcrumbing comes in. A simple place to leave your sign-up address where most people don’t. And I’m talking about the less obvious places that you wouldn’t normally think of.
